Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Skating

By far one of the most popular activities during the winter at McQueen Lake is skiing and snowshoeing. We are always in need of donated ski equipment. If you can help, let us know (see bottom of page)

Costs

There is a $5 charge per student for the use of the skis and/or snowshoes.

Procedures

  • Dan will help you sign the equipment out at the beginning of your trip and sign it back in prior to your group's departure.
  • Equipment is numbered and assigned to each student. The students are then responsible for the return of their equipment.
  • There is also skating on McQueen Lake. Just check with the McQueen office as to whether a rink has been cleared and that the ice is safe.

Considerations

  • Although there are marked and groomed trails at the centre, groups may want to use the lake as their ski area. It offers the advantage of being able to maintain supervision of a group while allowing those with different speeds and skiing abilities to participate without disruption of one another.
  • Get Dan to help you sign the skis out and back in again. This should help streamline the process and keep the equipment better organized. Get as many other volunteers to assist with the process of getting students equipped, it can be quite lengthy without extra help.
  • Never allow groups to go off on their own. All groups should have at least two leaders and have your authorization to go on the trails. If groups are to use the trails, ensure that the people (at least two leaders, one in front - one in back) are familiar with the trail system and the manner that it is marked.
  • You may want to use the FRS radios that are up at McQueen (ask Dan). These little two-way radios can be used by groups that are out on the trails for general communication and in case of an emergency.
