ACTIVITIES
Use the beautiful surroundings of McQueen Lake to inspire the writing of haiku. Emphasis on the strict 5, 7, 5 syllable format, is reduced in order to focus on the more important exercise - observation and creativity.
This activity helps guide students by having them 'explode' or break apart their observations prior to writing.

Lessons & Activities
The outdoor classroom can really help to bring many aspects of the curriculum to life, and language arts is no exception. Many groups use journal writing as a way by which to document and reinforce what they have learned during their trip, but there is far more potential here. Using the sensory rich environment as a foundation and source of inspiration, along with the guidance of their teacher, students are capable of creating works that may surprise you.
